The Prophet That Made Us Read The Bible Naked

I know that this sounds like a tragedy, but it’s actually kinda funny.

I lived in Ibadan, Nigeria with my grandmother for most of my childhood and about approximately a third of my life. She raised me Anglican and through her, I learned to love the concept of God. I loved Christianity and how interesting it could be. I loved the crazy women that would roll on the floor when giving testimonies and would get passive-aggressive and narrow their eyes when the pastor asked if they could return the microphone. I loved the Anglican procession and how the Vicar would wink and smile at me, whenever I made faces at him. I loved how culture and faith seemed to mix in a way that brought people together.

My grandma also introduced me to the concept of night vigils. For those who don’t know what a night vigil is, it’s a practice in some Christian circles, where believers gather together in the dead of the night to pray, worship and fellowship together. For a lot of people, it’s a very important practice and should be incorporated into the regular disciplines of the believer.

I hate night vigils.

I’ve never understood why I have to sacrifice precious sleep to pray to God when I could easily do so in the day. It’s not in the Bible, so I really want to find out who randomly thought to themselves, “Sleep is…
